Carol - Stranger #2
December 9, 2016
This is Carol. Like Ambi (Stranger #1), I approached her at market. When I explained the project to her, she agreed to participate, although I immediately sensed that she was feeling pretty self conscious about it. I tried to draw her out, but had very little luck learning much about her other than that she originally comes from Goroka. She wouldn't even look at the camera for the first few shots, and then I got an embarrassed smile which ended like this. Thank you, I told her. That wonderful smile is exactly why I approached you!
This was early morning, and the sun decided to pop out from behind the hills right when I was taking Carol's photo. I wasn't looking for direct sunlight, but that's what I got.
I'm beginning to see that this project will be a challenge for me, since I live in a rural area and don't get out much. Market is a natural gathering time, but it may not be the ideal place for portraits, as there is always a crowd watching what I'm doing! It's a small community, and I've probably already got the reputation of "that waitskin lady who is going to ask to take your picture."
Thanks, Carol, for sharing your smile! This picture is no. 2 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page.
